Department of “Structural Biology and Biophysics”:

Structure and Activity of Biomolecules and their Assemblies”

Heads: Bernard Monsarrat, Lionel Mourey, and Justin Teissié

A strong network has been established at the IPBS between the 8 different teams of this department using synergic approaches combining protein technology, computational biology, structural biology, functional biophysics, and neurobiology for the elucidation of the structure and function of biological membranes.

These teams use multiple and complementary experimental approaches from structural biology and biophysics, in synergy with a set of cutting edge facilities (proteomics, fluorescence imaging, 3D structure determination, screening, etc.) which have been labelled at the national level (IBiSA).

The projects of the department relate to the comprehension of the fundamental mechanisms of life, developing applications in the field of pharmacology. Most of these developments are shared with the departments “Biology of Cancer” and “Molecular Mechanisms of Mycobacterial Infections”.

Accordingly, a strong network of collaborations is currently maintained and developed within the Institute and at the French and European levels. Future developments will be devoted to help promote the emergence of the very exciting field of structural molecular and cell biology, i.e. providing biological information at different spatial resolutions and time scales.
