IL-33, from inflammation to platelets: towards a better understanding of certain forms of thrombocytopenia
IL-33 is a key cytokine in inflammation, but may also play a role in platelet biology. In Genes and Immunity, scientists have combined AI-assisted structural modelling with functional analyses to characterise two human variants of IL-33 and its receptor IL-1RL1 (ST2), identified in a patient with thrombocytopenia. Their work shows that these variants disrupt IL-33/ST2 signalling and reveals the potential role of this pathway in certain forms of thrombocytopenia.
